Didn't hear Lauer's interview, but Imus doesn't have the constraints TV has.
He also is intelligent and interested, which is not a prerequisite to host morning television. That's why it cracks me up when people on this board put him down. He has better guests and far better exchanges than most anywhere else in morning tv or radio. Go ahead, listen to Howard or Diane or Katie and Matt. Imus is where you'll get the best stuff. And some junior high humor.
