if it's US..(the reporter) saying the word, then yes, it's probably inappropriate.. on the other hand, if it's used by someone we're interviewing, then i don't think we should go around trying to maage what they say.. they said it..it's their opinion, or their reaction....and as such, i say go with it..it's certainly not worth screwing up your story by trying to get them to say it another way..here's a somewhat lesser, but apt comparison..here in san diego, we as writers are generally forbidden to use the politically incorrect words "illegal alien" in our copy.. BUT..that's the term the border patrol uses, and when they use it, it goes on the air..after years of trying to escape the p.c. terms like "undocumented worker", or several other p.c. approved terms, we've finally gotten the tacit o.k. to use the word "illegal"..just can't attach "alien" to it.. even though it's the CORRECT terminology..go figure.. |

Saw a story on one of the Phoenix stations last week regarding "illegal aliens." Supporters of people making a run for the border were called "immigration advocates." Don't recall hearing "illegal" in the story, though I could be wrong.
Someone wrote about not altering soundbites, that it's not the reporter's job to "clean it up." On Groundhog Day 2004, the guy reading the somewhat goofy proclamation kept butchering his lines. It was really bad. I don't know if he was drunk, nervous, tired or a little of each, but it took him about 40 seconds to get through what would've been a nice 15-20 second bite. I asked the EP if I should clean it up, since we're talking Groundhog Day here, and no need to make the guy look bad, right? Answer? No freakin' way.
