In Reply To: They're all "code words" for That Which Must Not Be Said on TV ... and in the context of the story, it was inappropriate to use that SOT. Pitts could have done another interview or two to get good sound that didn't include "friggin'" or any other borderline language. The whole thing was really odd.
Message: if it's US..(the reporter) saying the word, then yes, it's probably inappropriate.. on the other hand, if it's used by someone we're interviewing, then i don't think we should go around trying to maage what they say.. they said it..it's their opinion, or their reaction....and as such, i say go with it..it's certainly not worth screwing up your story by trying to get them to say it another way..here's a somewhat lesser, but apt comparison..here in san diego, we as writers are generally forbidden to use the politically incorrect words "illegal alien" in our copy.. BUT..that's the term the border patrol uses, and when they use it, it goes on the air..after years of trying to escape the p.c. terms like "undocumented worker", or several other p.c. approved terms, we've finally gotten the tacit o.k. to use the word "illegal"..just can't attach "alien" to it.. even though it's the CORRECT terminology..go figure..
