In Reply To: If the number two person at the FBI reached out TODAY to someone at a major newspaper or network, I think his/her information would also be taken seriously. Perhaps the info would be treated more gingerly. Perhaps news managers would want to know much more about who it was than Ben Bradlee did in the beginning. But if someone at that level volunteers info on a confidential basis, no matter what the motivation, it has to be handled with common sense and the instincts of seasoned professionals and managers interested in more than good promos.
Message: There have been people in this admin who have spoken out against Bush, and the admin has successfully painted all of them as "disgruntled". The media has decided to wave the flag and listen to this admin's bullshit that going after the Prez is unpatriotic. Felt may have had an axe to grind...but there was no way he could have gone through proper channels and had the truth come out. The man could have cashed in on the notoriety but chose to stay anonymous until age 91. The man is a true hero. Thank God we had him and the Washington Post...and also the other media that glommed onto the story. There is no way that the celebrity "journalists" of today would do the same. Especially when real news like Michael Jackson and the runaway bride call for all their attention.
