The thing you have to remember is shops like 8 weren't established to be like affiliates. They're not even trying to beat the local stations. It is a TWC sales method, but in the process, it's become a different kind of contender. The website gets more hits and awards than other news sources in town, everyone knows "weather on the 8's" and it's the place to turn for immediate breaking news. The quality may not be the same as other stations at times, but lets face it, no one looks great in Austin. Patti Smith (KVUE GM) is quoted in the Statesman from 1999, saying News 8 (or any other local TV product) is competition and something that will take ratings away. Will it ever be the most watched station at 6? Probably not, nor will any other cable station. Count numbers all day and you'll be suprised. Call the ND and he'll explain how they do in fact have more viewers. Do your homework and recognize how your station has changed as a result of the local 24 station. You might be suprised. |

who understands. It's a tough crowd here :)
The thing that grabs my attention is that it's ok to copy stories from News 8, but not consider the station something worth following. We work hard and have people 20 times better than the affiliates. Every shop has people who have no business in TV. We could name names but that's tacky. For a station that hasn't been around but 5 or 6 years, I think it's done pretty good holding its own, especially considering how long the local oldies have been around.
