In Reply To: Hey lack tate; it is a business. You've lost 40% of your late news audience over the last two years. 40%! If I'm a shareholder, and I am, I am pissed at the ineptitude and loss of viewership that continues at this station. KNXV beats you now 5-7AM. Who's making those decisions? Beat by 15!!! How does that happen? And you did not win the 6p. KTVK did. Sorry..it's a game of inches and you didn't get the score. They did. If your promotion department is counting the plus numbers in Flagstaff to justify a win let's talk because that is a stand alone station selling only to the Flagstaff community. By the way, your numbers at 5p are down over 33% and the 6 is down almost 40% too. I may be a loser, but your numbers continue to be a joke. I don't mind your station promoting things on air if they are true and backed by facts. Where's the facts, Jack! Then I'll back off.
Message: Alright, I'm no fan of Gannett. Have worked for them in the past. But this business is not necessarily all about being #1 in a market. It costs a lot of money to be #1. And stations/owners look at expenditure vs. return first. Moreso than ratings. Certainly, ratings can and do play a big part in the overall scheme. But if I can be #2 or #3 with significantly lowered expenditures (let's say 'jettisoning' all the expensive veterans and doing things on the cheap)... that could work! You see, top ad rates in a market like Phoenix may not be incrementally so much higher for a station at #1 vs. #2 or 3. So why would a station spend $5 million more... for example... to realize $2 million more in revenue... when they could spend half that $5-million, and realize $1.75 million in revenue. This is the game. Though they want you (peons) to think that ratings matter to keep you working your butt off. Again, ratings matter to a point... and certainly they can go low enough to slash ad revenues... and that's when heads roll. But as long as expected revenues are rolling in... and KPNX still seems to be doing well enough for that... the corporation is happy.
