Thursday, May 26, 2005 By Frank Herron Staff writer Time Warner Cable plans to eliminate about 22 positions at News 10 Now, the local 24-hours news channel. In addition, 12 to 15 news anchors and control-room staff are being asked to present Central New York's news from a studio at Time Warner's Capital News 9 in Albany, which will become a "news hub" for the cable company's three Upstate channels. Syracuse will, in turn, serve as the "weather hub" for the channels. Although some workers might be coming to Syracuse, the departures will outnumber the arrivals at the news studio in the former New York Central railroad station on Erie Boulevard East. Journalists and technicians were notified of the changes at a meeting Wednesday morning. The job cuts, which will mostly take effect in October, will leave a staff of about 50 to 55 people in Syracuse, said Jeff Unaitis, a vice president at the Syracuse division of Time Warner. All told, Time Warner's three Upstate news channels - in Rochester, Syracuse and Albany - will lose up to 38 positions out of 260 in the combined staffs. Most of the cuts will be in technical positions. If the numbers hold up, it looks as though Syracuse will absorb nearly 60 percent of the job losses.
Message: these folks land? Do you think any R-news types will land on their feet in town? I know there are a few openings out there.
