In Reply To: the childless people who've responded so far are either kidding or represent a small minority. This job is a means to an end, not an end in itself. For parents, that end is providing for a family and seeing that family once in a while. This business stopped being a public service a long time ago. Those of you who are sacrificing the important things in your life for the company are the idiots, not the parents who talk endlessly about their angels.
Message: I don't know why 8 of the posts on this thread were pulled ... The majority of parents are responsible and work hard to be good parents and good employees ... but there are those who constantly pull out the kid excuse for not being able to stay late and cover a big story, can't come in early, can't stay until the end of their shift, can't be on call, can't can't can't ... My point is other parents can, other parents have to juggle things, take vacation days for important kid appointments or to go on school field trips. Other parents take the overnight shifts so they can be home during the day or when the kids get home from school. You know what? I don't have a problem helping these parents out, and it's usually with a fair amount of notice and not just dropped on me ... emergencies are different (but they should be true emergencies, not I forgot I promised to do something). Children are a responsiblity, but so is your job. People shouldn't get a pass just because they have kids.
