In Reply To: Let me state the obvious - 1. Kids are not pets. The hope is that you can raise children to become productive and contributing members of society. 2. Sometimes this requires blurring the line between work and 'life'.... If indeed we can all agree that we want to raise productive members of society, that is. 3. I don't think anyone in this business gets pregnant and thinks "Cool. Now I get to leave early for my kid's little league game in 8 years"..Get real. 4. As a society, we need to focus less on being bitter and jealous about meager allowances granted towards working parents and focus more on supporting those who desperately try to juggle work and good parenting - which will benefit us all in the long run. 5. Finally, I wholeheartedly agree that real life bleeds into work life and all employers should make accomodations for that. I also agree that some people have no ethics and will abuse whatever 'allowance' they are given. I say 'bust em' if you can.
Message: ...don't know or take into consideration -- 1) the times those of us with kids are called into the ND's office and are chewed out because we've scheduled appt's, had to leave early, etc due to kids. Don't always see that happening to the singles who are late, leave early for other reasons. 2) The hate we can feel eminating from you because our priorities are different. Do I talk about my kids? You bet. I also have people ask me about my kids. I ask them about their lives. It's called building friendships and relationships with the people I work with. If you don't want to hear about your co-workers lives (I'd assume that means you don't want to hear about someone's hot date, class reunion, family outing, weekend away, etc), you should tell them you're cold-hearted and don't care about anyone other than yourself. That way, everyone will know where you stand and will leave you alone. BTW -- there are more people in my newsroom working today (Memorial Day) who have family and kids, than the singles or married people w/o kids.
