the indy 500 has been in steady decline. i know i will be roasted for writing this but, does anyone think danica patrick would have finished 4th against the old indy 500 fields of the unsers, andretti's, sneva's, etc.?
she is a product of the watered down competition in the irl today. hell, they have a hard time finding 33 drivers that actually run a quaifying speed without killing themselves in practice much less in traffic.
the tv audiences don't lie. the rating decline is in direct proportion to the decline in competition and quaility of cars.
i wish her well, but truth be told she's only marginally faster than the janet guthrie's that used to just barely make the field 20 years ago.
abc uses its 3rd tier talent because the event only attracts a 3rd tier audience. I remember as a kid planning my memorial day around the 500. sunday, i watched the last 5 laps on my to hbo's shrek 2!
the coca cola 600 is now the much bigger event. it didn't use to be that way. |
