Instead of investing in 4 new pretty anchors DG should hire some seasoned reporters. When is the last WUSA broke a big story - or even advanced one?
Solid, credible journalism is the only way to bring the station back to respectability.
Also weather is the number reason viewers give for watching. It's obvious Topper is not the answer and no one else on the staff has any name recognition in the market. So either hire someone in the market (Sue Palka) who can bring immediate impact, or go out and find someone who can come in and break through the clutter?
By attacking on two fronts you can build a credible news outlet with a personality who makes things interesting. |

Yes, having some seasoned journalists who actually know how to present a story (without necessarily having an eye for a position on the anchor desk) would help.
The weather issue has been evident for years now. Topper either needs to shift to mornings, where he was once a dominant player (but could he be again? I don't know.) or go to another market (Orlando would be a good fit). Pann and Bernstein have had their shot but neither have produced either recognition or ratings. Kim Martucci, with good direction, could be a player in DC but it is early in the game.
But Sue Palka most certainly is NOT the answer. She fits well with FOX5, but like Tracey Neale might have a hard time on another station. The best answer would be to hire a hard core, forecast driven meteorologist on one of the weekday night shows (possibly in combination with Kim) and then a woman for weekends.
Whatever happens, WUSA has a long way to go before reclaiming a slice of the DC market ratings pie.
