I think this has actually been somewhat of an interesting discussion. There are two points, I'd like to make.
One, to this point, nobody has mentioned an obvious point, at least it seems obvious to me. Just because he is young and a minority doesn't mean he isn't any good. This idea that if you are young and a minority and make the big time quickly, there is almost always something untoward going on or you got there with all sorts of help is inaccurate. Does it happen. Yes. Are some of those folks very deserving of their opportunity? Yeah. If he got a break, who cares, this business is about being in the right place at the right time. If you're good at what you do, your talent wins out. You could be old or young, a Caucasian or a minority, talent trumps all. For example, Bryant Gumbel was young and a minority, but you know, he turned out to be a good hire. That being said I would say most on this chat board have never seen him on-air but because of his age and look have all sorts of opinions already formed of him.
Is Chicago a rough market? Yes. He is coming from El Paso, Texas so he gets all sort of grief. In the last few years, one Chicago television station has hired talent from Green Bay, Albany, and South Bend, Indiana. Not exactly El Paso but not much different. All of those hires from middle-markets were white. There was never a word raised about their qualifications. Although, when this guy comes from El Paso and you look at his surname it is open season on this guy. Stop it. He got a break. If you hang in there, you'll get one as well.
I think statobvious, the previous post here also makes some valid points.
