the shaft for so long. Aren't these minority programs in place because they were getting f'd from behind for so long? As a white guy I see nothing wrong with it. They are TALENTED in addition to being a minority. How do their programs differ from our ol' white boy network on the golf course...or "my dad was frat brothers with your dad" kind of thing. Get over it. |

Although I don't necessarily feel that I am owed something because of past mistakes as a minority...I'm glad you pointed out the obvious.
I work right now with a kid reporting straight out of college because his dad plays golf with the GM. This is a 50's market. And he's certainly not the first person I've had to deal with who got their job that way. But you know what, I don't let it bother me because just because he got a break NOW..doesn't mean he'll keep getting them. He'll sink or swim.
While a few years ago stations were jumping for minorities, it was because they had NONE! Now that everyone has at least one; its not as easy as you think.
I'm black and female and repped by a good agent, graduated with a double major, top of my class after being a National Merit Scholar. I speak Spanish fluently.
I actually believed all those white profs who claimed my life was gonna be so easy because I'm a female minority.
Thank God I got snapped back into reality quick!
I'm only considered for jobs when they need a black woman to fill the spot. I've been told I'm too light, too dark, and my hair is too curly, etc..etc.. a news director once pulled out a tape of a fair skinned, green-eyed black woman and told me
" This is what you really need to look like to get where you want to go."
I could write pages about some rather demeaning experiences, but even so I don't walk around begrudging people who got jobs I think I should have gotten because they were prettier, smarter, thinner, taller, blonder WHITER, whatever.
It's ignorant and pointless. Right now the industry discriminates against ugly people, fat people, and old people. Is it fair, no. But if I were truly concerned with equity and getting pay directly commensurate with my level of experience I would went to work for the government like my dad told me to. T.V., modeling and show business are three things you don't do if you really think life should be fair.
GET OVER IT!
