SO WHAT'S IT ALL MEAN???
In the mornings:
KVUE continues strong--ahead from last may.
KXAN falls after a good Feb performance. 5-6am is up slightly from may '04 but the 6-7am hour is down a point from last May.
KTBC bounced back from a bad Feb, but is still down from a year ago.
KEYE fires anchors no-one knew were on TV, demoted a main anchor to the mornings, and still ended up with WORSE numbers than a year ago.
EARLY AFTERNOON:
KXAN, God luv 'em, keeps chug'n along with their 4PM. Hardly any resources put in it compounded by tough deadlines to meet, and alternating anchors,so no wonder it's anemic in numbers. but it sure beats jane pauley or tony danza.
AT 5PM
KVUE continues to rule the roost. Trivia fans keep jeopardy going strong on KXAN(even w/out Ken Jennings).
the BIG STORY here FOX FALTERS, makes you wonder if this new outta-the-blue anchor team will ever catch on. In FEB 05, FOX-7 beat KEYE in the 5-530 slot (just as Ray predicted in Jan) Notice Ray made no such prediction in April. KEYE is still essentially flat May '0 4 to May '05. But FOX's stumble makes KEYE look good.
NETWORK EVENING NEWS:
the people in the chairs have changed, but the ratings stay the same.
ABC/WORLD NEWS TONIGHT wins even w/ Jennings sidelined for chemo. At NBC B-W took the reins from Browkaw and stays in 2nd.
Over at CBS, Dan departed under a cloud of controversy, but no one watched him them and as much as you gotta love Bob Schieffer (& all the hip new ties he bought for anchor duty) no one is watching them now.
AT 6PM
what a horserace-- closer than the Derby or Preakness!!!
KVUE wins In a photo-finish but is flat as the high plains the drifta calls home.
But KXAN in a deeper canyon than the Big Bend (off more than point from May 04).
KEYE seems to have passed the RGV and drifted south o'the border. Tim Gardner and the gang find themselves beat by Simpsons on Fox & Friends on the WB. Despite the set changes, anchor shuffle, graphics update, new branding slogan of CBS 42 KEYE News Coverage You Can Count ON is also down a point from last May.
PRIMETIME:
not quite a tsunami of a sea change, but CBS prime is blazn'n like wind-whipped wildfire on the prairie.
NBCs once ratings inferno is reduced to a pile of smolder'n ashes.
ABC is shoot'n sparks to get a little noticed. Sundays remain the strong night. But M-F they shoot their wad early and peter out from 9pm-10pm. ABC still sit's in 3rd.
AT 10PM:
Another wild ride!
KVUE battled back from last May to win this book. But truth be told, KVUE is down ever so slightly May to May.
KXAN took the big hit tumbling 2 points from a year ago.
KEYE is as close as they have EVER been since they signed on the air in the market. But, again, they are down from a year ago. And when you weigh in the "Primetime factor" it's disappointing.
CBS prime is the strongest it's been since meters hit the market. (up a point from last May) Yet KEYE still isn't retaining the eyeballs the eyeball network hands them.
So 'drifta there's your numbers. Everyone will seek some shade this summer, regroup, and come out guns a blaz'n this fall.
look for Eliasoph to vanish from the anchor desk, if not KEYE's air, Fred to start sett'n his alarm clock extra early. And Judy and Ron together AGAIN (for the 3rd time) to hold down the fort at 5,6, & 10.
With all these fat paychecks from the KVUE ship jumpers, it makes you wonder how CBS 42 KEYE News Coverage You Can Count on can afford to hire a new Assistant news Director???
