I think you are all right in saying that Rachel isn't the most talented of reporters. But she is a very good story teller. I've read a couple of her articles on ESPN.com and I thought they were very good and even witty. I think between that and that she isn't an unattractive lady probably helped in getting her the job... not to mention the fact that she knows the right people!!!
That said, she really does need to work on her standups. If you watch them consistantly enough, you will see they are always exactly the same thing. Her standing there with her hands clasped in front of her and her elbows sticking out to the sides. The camera shot is always the same too with a still shot for a while and then a slow zoom in. I think what may help is if she did some moving standups. Maybe that will help get her to loosen up a little bit and get her more comfortable on camera.
