Know of a couple of people who've done that accidently, thinking they were cleared and off-air and no one was ever fired.
One in particular was in a top-20 and jumped to top-5 a year or two after the incident. He wasn't fired, but felt bad about the whole thing because he'd thought he was off-air at the time. Was at the end of his shot and something had gone wrong with his feed or tape. Can't remember exactly.
It's an accident. No reporter (or anchor) says something like that deliberately. Management should consider that. But if they were looking for an excuse to get rid of a reporter, they'd probably jump on something like this to kick them out the door.

But don't want to mention their names. Some are friends of mine. No point in dragging them into this. They were accidental slips and their NDs talked to them, but didn't fire them. They're in top markets now. Just wouldn't be fair to them at this point.
Like I said, not all management is as hard-nosed as the one in NY. I think it has a lot to do with how much the ND likes the person who slipped up. If they're looking for a reason to get rid of you, they'll jump on something like this. If they like you and don't want to lose you, they'll talk to you and let it all blow over.
