In Reply To: I live in sunny CA. It is warm and perfect all the time. But in a few weeks I am taking a job up north where it snows and gets below 32 degress most of the winter. I've never lived anywhere where it snowed or got cold. What do I need to know to prepare for the drastic change? If you made the move from a warm climate to cold ... I'd love some advice.
Message: Winter is not bad if you learn to enjoy it. Be sure to take a little time to experience the outdoor activities that are not available in the "warm and perfect" place where you've lived. Try skiing, ice skating, sledding, etc. Those of us who grew up in the north enjoyed all these things as children, and still enjoy them as adults. Driving can be more challenging. Allow more time to get places. It doesn't hurt to follow the annual advice about a little survival kit in the car, just in case you go off the road and get stuck during a snow storm. (A cell phone might be enough, though - depending on where you are.) Cold is very manageable if you dress properly. And you've already had some good advice here. Good boots are important, and a hat is especially important if you are going to be outside very long.
