Yes, yes, we know it was a joke. But other repsonses have brought up some serious points. It is the same old debate over minorities getting jobs easier than whites in news. Somehow it nevers gets any clearer.
Dlink recounts the story of the "Unattractive White Reporter" who couldnt get a job like this is OK. He/she mentions that this individual had several Emmys, etc, etc, but when it came down to it, his looks get in the way. Well, that is exactly the point -- and exactly what is wrong with news now. You say something to the efect of "People dont look at what they are doing wrong and blame minorities." How is being unattractive wrong? I just dont get it. Is everyone here fine with the principle that you can be a kick-ass reporter but if you're not gorgeous you dont belong in news?
And it's true that I dont think minorities are grabbing all the jobs. Sexual Chocolate points out that he/she looks "too ethnic." It's true. NDs/consutants, etc. are looking for talent that is "Black, but not too Black" "Latino but not too Latino". A gentrified version of the ethnicity is what is desired and it is just crap. |

No, I didn't say that the reporter was ugly, in fact, he is not. Just average, and that's NOT why the agent said the reporter couldn't be moved. It was rather, his presence on camera...as he did not have any. Solid reporter but his delivery was bland.
You wouldn't have paid attention to him, but if you did, you would get the story. The only problem was, he was too boring for the viewer to stay focused. Got it? That's what he didn't focus on...only that he was "white"--if he worked on his on-camera presence, I'm sure he'd have no problem.
and ask any agent, consultant, news director...that's what most of management will tell you they are looking for.
