Can I Move Down Markets? |

I'm currently working in a mid level market as a reporter and I am deciding between two jobs - one about 15 markets higher (cedar rapids) the other 15 lower (boise).
Is it a death sentence to move "laterally" or down slightly at the start of my career? Will an employeer not higher me in the future? How much should I consider market size?
I think the overall production quality of the lower market station is actually better, and I really think I could do better work there.
Any advice or suggestions?
Thanks!!! |

Consider: (no order)
Which is better to raise a family?
Which is closer to family?
Which is a better news town?
Where is each station competitively in the market?
Which station seems better poised for your growth and the station's?
How do you, ND, GM stack up on chemistry?
What station groups are you considering (or which are you across the street from)?
Do these groups have stations in markets you like?
This should get you started.
In the future, you can tell prospective employers, "I was reluctant at the time (to move), but now I can tell you this was a great jump, and really helped me improve."
I'm in a 40-market station, (non-news) and what's on your reel is more important than your stops.
