As a director with 25 years experience, I have never started a show without putting on my headsets. It's part of my job. In fact, I am constantly amazed at how some talent, who are paid quite well, can not perform the simplest task of their job such as putting on a mic. Sure audio ops should get mic checks whenever possible, but sometimes control room chaos prevents that, and it's those times especially when talent should be competent, and reliable enough to at least "get dressed" for the show without having to be babysat.
