let's not all forget some of Dan's wisdom in one of his first all staff meetings. "We can all get on a bus to Medford and see a better newscast". I'm sure one of the stations down there would happily accept his resume, with all of his large market experience.
I knew we were in trouble not only then, but in another meeting where it was mostly about him... "let's get to know Dan" where we got to hear what former co-workers thought of him... and him asking us what we thought of him.
Dan continually referred to "we did this at KRQE"... he was also brought in as the "choosen one" by Emmis corporate to turn KOIN around. This is why many people mock him and the Q, because he set expectations that could never be reached... based on a completely different market and his unique experiences there. Remember, he wasn't concerned about the 5 and 6pm, rather he wanted to dominate the 11pm? Took his eye off the ball and got his ass kicked. He was a micromanager, couldn't stay focused on any one thing very long. At least regarding me, he formed an opinion about me before I even had my first meeting with him... and continually got screwed by his decisions without regard.
Lets also not forget there are still people in the newsroom who need to "resign", who sadly - I believe - don't know they too are sources of deep running problems as well. Just my humble opinion. |

While the sighs of relief from the KOIN tower are audible across Portland, the sad thing for that shop is this:
KOIN is now three news directors away from being back in the hunt.
The first one will have to unscramble the mess and the divisions in the newsroom. This will kill him/her, and he/she will leave within two years.
#2 will build on that work and leave for a better offer.
#3 will either take the station back into the race...or sink it...and then the rule of three starts over again.
P.S. Sale of the station restarts the rule of 3.
