I would agree with cameraman. I used to intern at an L.A. station. You just have to know when to be assertive and friendly or observant and kinda just stick to the sidelines. However if you do find people in the newsroom during their down time or not busy... ask if you can help them out with something... or come prepared with questions.
I know this sounds kinda wrong but let them take advantage of you. Learn everything you can. The longer they see you hanging out in the newsroom, they'll begin to recognize your face and notice that you're dedicated. Then they'll start investing their time in you.
