In Reply To: mobilinmobile, you make a good point about the lack of compelling news moments in Portland, which makes it difficult for lower stations to catch the #1. It's good logic. However... I'm not sure how well you know the history of this market. It's always been a sleepy news town... but KGW hasn't always been the leader. Most newbies to Portland are surprised to hear that KGW has only been in its #1 position for about 5 years now. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was all KOIN. In the late 1980s, KATU took over, and hung on until the mid-late 1990s. Between 1997 and 2000, it was a 3-way fight. And now the market is KGW's. My point: turnover at the top has happened frequently in this "sleepy" news town. But I will say this: with each turnover mentioned above, the #1 gave it away. With that said, two things must happen in order for KGW to lose its #1 hold on Portland: 1) KGW must give it away by making a catastrophic error (or set of errors), and 2) KATU or KOIN must be good enough at the time to take advantage of KGW's blunder. KGW's current management doesn't have any history of making poor decisions, and neither KATU nor KOIN are in any position to pounce. So the market is KGW's for a while, in my opinion...
Message: The reason why Dan did well in Albuquerque and not in Portland is simple. When he arrived at the "Q" the people there knew they sucked and wanted to get better. The people in KOIN are still in denial. You cannot get someone to stop drinking who doesn't think he has a problem.
