In Reply To: I would like some info on the mobile/pensacola market. I know the lay of the land - but I'm interested in the types of stories each station covers. what types of stories are big in the market? Is it crime driven? Features? also, any insite into the stations themselves would be appreciated. Thanks
Message: Sadly, this market has deteriorated over the years to what might now be almost an entry level market. The Mobile stations are scanner driven...obsessed with car wrecks and crime. WKRG even sends its helicopter out to wrecks, frequently teases them in prime time. They are the "country" station...local yokel appeal and kind of a "golly shucks" attitude. In addition, they are obsessed with weather alerts when they are not even necessary. The constant squeezebacks can make shows unwatchable. WALA is a fox station that doesn't even have a 6pm or 10pm, just a 5pm & 9. WPMI has hired most of WKRG's people. Their reporters are green. The other night a reporter doing a story on alleged sexual harassment said "the woman allegedly grabbed the boy by the goods." Obviously no script arpproval there. WEAR is the only station in Pensacola, and does a nice job...even some enterprise stories, which you don't see much out of the Mobile stations. Their ND is also a good guy. Pensacola is also a much nicer town than Mobile, which is rather dirty.
