In Reply To: Phil Brady the LA buraeu chief 1984 or thereabouts? Kind of a stiff as I recall, ex-marine I think?
Message: Yes, Phil Brady was the L.A. bureau chief from 1982 - 1985. After making friends with everyone in the L.A. bureau he was transferred to Atlanta as overnight producer, then he worked for CNN International until he left the company and resurfaced in L.A. at KTTV. I've heard he was in the Marines, and from what I've read on the Internet he used to be NBC's Saigon correspondent/bureau chief, if you can believe that. Whether he perfected his scanner-hurling skills in Saigon or the States is anyone's guess. Once you've worked with Phil Brady you don't soon forget it. In the L.A. bureau, crews didn't get their call times until they had gone home for the day and the nighttime assignment editor called them at home. You didn't find out Thursday's call time until about 8 pm Wednesday night. In addition to scheduling, one of the many other things that sucked about CNN was the lack of uniformity in pay rates. You were paid whatever you could negotiate with the manager hiring you, based on what they thought you were worth. I never gathered enough data to determine whether there was a pattern of paying men more than women, or people with families to support more than single people, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that were the case.
