Face facts:
#1: Without the strong CBS lead-in, WBTV would not be winning the 11 pm.
#2: Without Oprah, WSOC and WBTV would be a lot closer at 5, 5:30 and 6.
#3: Without the Price Is Right, WBTV would not win at noon.
#4: Without Good Morning America, WSOC would not win mornings (and as long as WBTV has the CBS Early Show, it will never win mornings, no matter what is on ABC).
#5: WCNC will never win any time slot unless it comes up with a killer lead-in...and distinctive anchors who have at least an ounce of personality and don't put viewers to sleep. Think about it. The best known personality at WCNC is Larry Sprinkle...a weather guy who isn't even a meteorologist. But give the guy credit, he's got personality (and hair)!

And your #5 makes my point. In the day of every tv having a remote control, lead-ins only matter for the first few minutes. If what follows is junk the viewer will either turn the channel or just turn it off. My best example is when "ER" would pull numbers in the 30's and the 11pm news at WCNC would maybe pull a "2". Viewers will not watch your news just because they liked the show before it.
