In Reply To: Paul was well liked in Minnesota and top dog in the market. He got along with Diana Pierce and Pat Miles, his main co-anchors in Minneapolis. And SD Randy Shaver was a good friend. KARE 11, never a ratings contender, beat longtime competitors WCCO and KSTP within a few years of Magers' arrival. Paul's situation would be hard to replicate elsewhere. And even then could take some time. Magers tried to negotiate a new contract at KARE. He left there only after Gannett tightened its purse strings. Brother Ron knew Paul would have a hard time in leaving his Minnesota station after 20 years. He predicted Paul would eventually struggle with "What have I done?" Even after a year and a half, Magers may still be adjusting from leaving his comfortable position.
Message: people who didn't know him. He was a bitter man here in Minnesota too. His only joy seemed to be taking his enormous ego out for a stroll at the MPLS martini bars. And now in L.A. there are real stars, bigger stars, so he can't handle not getting noticed. On top of that, he's not really missed in Minnesota. KARE's old morning talk show host is getting better numbers than Magers ever did! And to come back to another station in the Twin Cities would be seen as a desperate need to salve his ego after FAILING in L.A. He'd better make it work right where he is.
