I understand how news organizations need to post openings for jobs or changes in schedules for EOE purposes. But as most know, not all of these jobs are actually available.
When those of us who are looking for jobs see this supposedly "open" positions, we rush tapes off.
It becomes increasingly frustrating when a station lists the job as an IMMEDIATE opening, even when there is no true opening. It forces those looking for a job to overnight a tape, only costing more money, and creating even more of a headache.
I just wish those posting the positions would realize that with each job posting that isn't truly open, they are really making things difficult for people looking for employment. They need to try NOT to suck people in, making them waste their time and money if the job isn't even available. |

hardly any news directors look at tapes IMMEDIATELY. Unless its a really small market and there isnt much for him to do!
So dont bother overnighting any tape..unless the nd calls you and tells you to. It usually takes 3 weeks for them to look at a tape...even when there is an opening. They get hundreds.
As for sending out tapes...just target a certain number of markets in your market range...and send tapes to all those stations.
You sound like you are looking for your first or second job. In that case..most of those stations have lots of turnover...and will likely have an opening anyway. But alot of the jobs that are posted on medialine are in fact..open.
Once you get farther in your career...an agent will help. Because he or she knows whether the job is really open or not..and who they are looking for. Countless times Ive said to my agent: "how about this opening?" and the reply: 'no..just talked to her..she's looking for a woman."
