Message: Bitterness, anyone? I remember when FM radio first came into the spotlight. All the experts said "no way! The sound is great, but FM has a line of sight signal... and half of America wouldn't recieve it." FM took off. Then... the naysayers said "FM is the way to go, AM radio is dying." Most AM stations I know of still turn a tidy profit. Now, they said FM radio is becoming extinct cause satellite radio will come in and destroy it. The same is being said about tv news. Folks... it's just evolving that's all. We all talk about how tv news used to be. Well guess what... 30 years ago all you had were three channels and a couple of crappy cable stations. Now, we have cable, satellite, internet, etc. The old way of doing tv news has to change. The market demands it. Local news will not die. Why? Because it is FREE. Furthermore, no satellite, internet, or cable station will be of any use if your community were hit with disaster such as a fire, storm, chemical spill... etc. Sure the way we deliver the news will be different, but overall... local news will survive. One last point... for those of you who claim that tv journalism is going down the tubes, remember one thing. Our jobs first and foremost are to entertain viewers until the next commercial break. We do that by providing some nice pictures and a story or two. It tooks me years to understand that, but in the end, my old mass comm prof was right. Everybody relax. We are not dying, just evolving. It's going to take some soul searching, some hard knocks, and hitting rock bottom, but I firmly believe what will emerge will be even better.
