In Reply To: Under Burt Reinhart, CNN enjoyed an unparalleled time of growth and prosperity. He was like the Wizard of Oz, very quiet, unassuming, and workmanlike, but very effective in his delegative leadership style. Kavanuagh was nuts, but so was Amos. And let us not forget Ed Turner, whose personal vision guided CNN newsgathering over the course its meteoric rise to organizational journalistic stardom. Sad and ironic that at the very moment CNN reached critical mass with the first Gulf War, it began to lose its way.
Message: Burt really saved CNN's ass and not that many people know it. You were right on the money about Gulf War I - I think CNN was at it's peak then. Anybody that has ever left CNN gets the same response: You worked for CNN? Wow, that must have been great. Why did you leave there? I gave up trying to tell people about the horrible management that drove many many good people out the door. Amos was better than Kavanau simply because he was not insane. Of course, you had to overlook the fact that he was a huge A-hole. People gave up saying hi to him in the hall when they passed, because he would ignore you. Unless you were on his level in management or above, you were not be be considered a person. The politics of getting ahead were too much for many people. In the end, I left as well. I loved the idea of CNN and I was proud I helped build it up. But I'm not sure I like what it has become today.
