In Reply To: TV news really is a personal pride craft. There's very little in the way of "nice job" or "way to go" platitudes, especially from management (who all should be forced to read "Winning" by former GE head Jack Welch). Awards are nice to get, no doubt. However, many people end up spending a fortune chasing them. Do your job well, make a few friends, and most of all, don't forget YOUR REAL priorities in life. No one ever wished they worked more OT, or won more local TV awards, as a death bed regret...
Message: I won a regional Emmy once, and was out on my ass in a matter of months. So was pretty much the rest of the crew on this "Emmy Award" winning newscast. It all depends on your managers. When the Emmy nominations came out, they didn't even bother to tell anyone that we were in the running. One of our co-workers found out and told us. The horrid station I worked for at the time could care less about putting on good work and good product. If you were "overpaid" in their eyes, they found a way to get rid of you and replace you with the lower paid writers. And this is a top 30 market, people! Am I bitter? Maybe, but I sure as heck am never going to work for that bunch of sleezebags again! Oh yeah, and they promoted their "Emmy Winning Newscast" for months afterward, of course, while all of the people who did the work were on the unemployment line. Nice business we're in, eh!
