note to young talent... dont listen to burned out, bitter people with sour grapes. If you are truly a talented, standout personality who commands the screen... you will rise to the top with no problem. And you will do it fast.
You can move on to a large market while you are young AND make a good amount of money.
25-thousand dollars in market 20 is sour grapes talking, trying to make excuses.
I made more than that in my first onair job out of college.
You can be 25...in market 20..and making 50-grand a year. Dont let people fool you into thinking all stations hire young and cheap. They may hire young...but not always cheap. If your good...there are others willing to pay you more...so you can get a good deal.
If you are a kickass aggressive young reporter, who leaves the old farts in the dust..you will move up and you will make plenty of money.
Dont let some of those who werent as hot as the up and comers fool you into thinking this is a bad business. Its a TOUGH business. Not a bad business. Only the strong willed and determined survive. And if you stick with it...success does come.
My favorite line that I live by.... "Its the hard that makes it special. If it wasnt hard...everyone would do it."
Only the best can cut it. Be one of them. |

a top 20 market, paying a reporter 50 grand IS CHEAP.
20 years ago, a top 20 reporter would be making almost 50 grand..... which was about union scale, even if your shop was not AFTRA...etc.
So what's that same 50k worth 20 years later when inflation's factored in?
