In Reply To: If Newsweek wanted to "RUSH" to get out a story about the Koran being flushed down toilets all they had to do was to interview the 12 former GitMo prisoners who have givent he same story to the BBC, the London Times and a variety of news organizations. Newsweek tried, as best they could, to confirm the story. They went to the Pentagon with the piece. The Pentagon gave them the go ahead and did not challenge the portion of the piece that they are being hung for. Further, their source did not say that the incident didn't happen. What he said was that the incident would appear in a gov't report. He had read an advance copy of the report and that the incident was included in the report. It was only later, when he saw the final versino of the report that he had to tell Newsweek that the incident would not be included. This is possibly the same information that the Pentagon used when they approved the report. There is no indication that the violence that broke out was due to the Newsweek article. The military spokesman indicated as much. He placed the blame on other factors when asked directly abou the incidents. Now HE is changing his story... guess that would make him unreliable as well. The problem of course is not wether the incident can be confirmed or not by Newsweek. The problem is that so many others are telling the same stroy. AND ... because of America's narrow world view ... we don't understand how the Koran is viewed in Muslim counties. We think, hell, it's just a book... toss out my bible and my faith is still intact. Desicrating the Koran is the same as someone burning an American flag. If US troops were forced to watch as flags were burned in their presence we would take it as a huge insult. That is how they feel in Afganistan, etc., about the Koran. Lastly it is NOT ... repeat NOT anti-American to report the truth. Reporting the truth, even if it hurts is the MOST American thing that we can do. Only in a facist country is it wrong to shine the light on the truth about ones own government. Remember, in the United States it is "Hail" not "Heil to the Cheif".
Message: why is the media so credulous about every tale told by a gitmo detainee? don't you know they're trained to make such accusations? furthermore, troops watch the flag being burned all the time. but we're civilized and don't riot and kill and declare holy war because some idiot burns the flag.
