Message: Look at all the people who stand out on the tube, in news or otherwise, the viewer has attached some kind of ID to them. For Jack Cafferty it's curmugeon (sp?), for Matt Lauer, it's just being Matt. For Bill Hemmer, he comes across as a nice smooth TV news person but leaves the audience with nothing memorable, and never has. His is a textbook example of a person who is a good reporter on a prime beat, like the White House, and nothing more. I think CNN is making the right move here. Soledad and Hemmer are deadly together. Thank God for Cafferty or "American Morning" would be totally forgetable. After seeing as many focus surveys from as many areas of the country as I have...it's clear, you need to register with the audience as having a PERSONALITY. The audience, for the most part, cares less about whether you are a smooth and polished performer. They care not whether your producer likes you cause he/she doesn't have to put you on the DR at the end of the show. The audience would rather see a freewheeling show rather than something that makes a news exec comfortable.
