Message: It all comes down to having what many of us call TV Q. If you stand out, have a niche, are original and are unique you'll go far. There are too many cookie cutter anchors out there. News directors and g.m.'s want someone who pops out of the screen, has authority and can think on his/her own without a producer feeding an anchor questions or answers. I was 20 when I landed my first main anchor job in a small market. If you want it badly enough and take the job seriously you'll do well. Realize this is television, and more than ever your "look" plays a major role in your success. I know that sucks, but it's true. If you are well read, know the issues, do your homework and have viewer appeal you'll have no problem. A lot of people throw the race card into the fold... Yes stations want to show diversity in their on air talent. All of us no matter your sex or race, are subject to rejection because a station may need to place either someone who is white, african american or asian etc into the anchor slot. But unless you are unlucky, there is a place for all of us. I got into this business and started making less that a thousand a month. I was a kid, but had I gotten in for the money, I would have found another profession in a heartbeat. I had friends who got into real estate, others became doctors, lawyers, etc and had palatial homes by the time they were 30. Not me... I struggled well into my 30's but it is paying off now. If you are really a true broadcast journalist and have passion for this craft... you'll do well. But be advised... TV news is changing. You have to be the "complete package" Sure beauty queens and ken dolls will have an easier time filling the anchor chair... but if you have the "smarts" , the charm, and looks, you'll be a hot commodity.
