In Reply To: obviously work in a Newsroom that is producer driven rather than desk driven. In the Newsrooms I've worked in the producers rule and the desk is the scapegoat. Also, try pushing the angry News Director off to a reporter who should have had the story.. right. Why doesn't the News Director go right to that reporter then?? I'll tell you why, cause most reporters are spoonfed by the desk and the News Directors know it. Plus many News Directors won't lay into one of their so called "great" hires..it's easier to rip the desk in a dramatic moment and huff back to behind closed doors. And for those that just think answering phones while juggling breaking news and getting video on your live newscast, at the same time is all in a secretarys days work, well, thanks for helping me prove my point. I think Grant and myself were just trying to point out that the desk is the most under appreciated job out there and folks shouldn't be shocked when one of those bottom rungers of the Newsroom makes it to the "coveted" anchor/reporter slot. Let's just end this discussion by agreeing to disagree. Way to go Art.
Message: A young person who kissed axx for a decade instead of actually going out and getting a small market anchor job. Now this person will be beat down because they didn't pay their dues, have no real experience being an anchor. Let's not even mention all the mistakes she/he will make that they should have made in market 171, not a top market. Thus all of us 30 somethings who got cursed out for even sending our resume tapes without 15 years of on-air experience 5 years ago. So we waited and paid our dues and now we're being passed over for some 20-somethings right out of college because we're too old. Why because even 7 years-ago 25 years olds were too young and almost murdered by staff members who were in their 40s and 50s. Now they're retiring and instead of hiring those of us who paid our dues, they're jumping over an entire generation of experienced journalists for the college kids. (sigh)
