Or did the Pentagon put pressure on Newsweek to retract the story because of the consequences?

The reporter who filed the errant report should resign on general decency. He's a terrific reporter; also the guy who did the Lewinsky reporting in Newsweek that nearly brought down Clinton. But when people die because of a wrong story, you should resign. So too should the editor who supervised the story.
