In Reply To: back to the original topic of discussion... i agree that it depends on the station and the different needs of different show schedules. my station has more news than just about everyone else, i think...5am-9am, noon-1, 5pm-7pm, 10pm-11:30pm...so we have to be covered 24 hours a day. we have a p/t AE that comes in 3am-9am, a f/t AE that works 7am-4pm, desk mgr that works 8am-6pm, planning editor that works 9am-6pm, another f/t AE that works a swing shift from noon-8pm, a f/t AE that works 2-11:30pm, and a p/t assistant that works 5-11pm. all that is monday-friday. on the weekends, we have 2 f/t AE's (8am-6pm & 2-11pm) and one p/t assistant that works noon-9pm. although on paper it may seem over-staffed, you never have enough people when the bottom falls out. also, i think we are fortunate that we always have someone on the desk except for about 2 hours overnights.
Message: Just curious if your producers are cross trained? Maybe someone could take the pre-prepare for the early and then shift over to write the morning show. May be too cumbersome.
