In Reply To: If find it ridiculous you feel you can't afford to live in California making $85,000 a year. Tell that to the poor migrant hispanic farm workers who labor in the fields of Salinas picking brocoli and beans and can't even get a drivers license because of Arnold Schwarzenegger! You should be ashamed of yourself for posting such a sorry ass sob story on a public forum. I have a suggestion for you, why don't you go down and vistit your local womens shelter and see how damn bad you really have it..bring your kids along too, they could get an education as well. Why not try donating a portion of that 85K to a local charity and make a difference in the community where you live rather than fantasize about living in a large home with a 3 car garage and a backyard pool. Get a LIFE!!!
Message: The cost of living is unbelievable. Housing costs have nearly doubled in the past couple years in many areas. 85,000 isn't a lot for S. Ca. especially if you have a spouse or kids. Your spouse will have to work. Gas prices are much higher here, your energy bill to heat and cool your Ca. home is out of control, public schools overall are poor and overcrowded, private schools are expensive, recreational activities are even more expensive, commutes are a royal pain. Any place that's somewhat affordable like Santa Clarita, Riverside, San Bernadino includes long commutes on overcrowed freeways. Depending on shift time your commute can take 1.5/2 hours EACH way. By the time you get home you are exhausted. All you want when you get home is dinner and to go to bed just so you can get up before the sun rises to do it all again. The affordable housing areas aren't where the weather is the most desirable either. 100 degree weather isn't my idea of pleasure. The air conditioner has to run 20+ hours a day and that is expensive. To work in LA means you work your assets off to survive in a highly competitive market. There's lots of good stations in other parts of the country where you can earn a good living, enjoy life, save for retirement, you can afford tp give to charity and not be always stressed out.
