In Reply To: WBAL: they live by their slogan. LIVE.LOCAL.LATEBREAKING. they have solid ownership in Hearst. The best anchors. They have plenty of toys in comparison to other stations in at least the way they use them. They battle for #1 with WJZ though are winning because JZ is slipping. WJZ: Terrible management. Shocking they still have ratings. They wouldn't if they weren't a legacy station. Bad anchors. Bad reporters. They are hampered because the ND is only a figurehead. Cannot make any real decisions. WMAR: Decent people, but cannot compete. No money from the parent company. No chopper. They'll be beat on every chase, major car accident and bad weather stories since they cannot get immediate shots from the air. The are dead last in the ratings. WBFF: The flagship of Sinclair, if you can call it a flagship. No chopper either. Bad set. Some decent reporters. They only directly compete in the morning, and they often beat WMAR, but cannot compete with JZ and BAL. WBAL appears the way to go. But some say it's a sweatshop. If you don't care if you ever win a newscast, WMAR might be good. If you want to work for a Republican slanted company, sinclair is the way to go. And WJZ is probably a no-no right now. They've lost their way. It's bad there
Message: I agree with some of poster's observations.... here's where I disagree: 1) No way is WBAL a sweatshop... if what I think you mean by sweatshop is that they crank out the product with great haste and low pay. The pay is good, better than most, benefits are solid. And on the "product" front... WBAL sent a (part-time) reporter to Europe to reunite Holocaust Survivors with the people who helped save them. They ran an hour-long primetime special without commercial interruption. She went because she pitched the story idea. Obviously that stuff doesn't happen every day and it's not unusual for reporters to "turn two" from 5-630pm, but there is opportunity for extraordinary TV at WBAL. (They just won a Peabody) 2. Don't count WJZ out yet. WJZ leads at 11pm (thanks to better network than NBC). Now...they have been known to drop the ball in the last two weeks, so I wouldn't celebrate yet. But if they do lose at 11pm after posting big wins in the beginning of the book... something tells me there will be more than a few posts on this site bemoaning the never-ending slide. (WJZ generally wins one 11pm sweeps per year... May could be the one). I agree that WMAR is a good choice if you don't care about winning... the people at WMAR are really nice and they pay *very* well. They also lack the desperation that is often reported at WJZ. WBFF has really gone down the toilet. They used to be fun to watch - long pieces. Now they just suck.
