While I agree that GW has been the worst president this country has ever witnessed, having forgotten the first words of the constitution read ??We the people of the United States??, not ??We the corporations and special interest groups of the United States???? and has abdicated his duties as President in order for him to please his corporate friends and sponsors, and the fact that history will judge him as being the president who did more to destroy the constitutional rights of its citizens so corporate America can make obscene profits at the expense of its citizens than any other President, and that this is the most secretive administration of all time. However, to get to the root of the problem of why the press and the media as a whole is such a biased (in either direction) travesty as it is today, we have to look back in history to the Regan administration, and his (Regan??s) veto of the fairness doctrine in 1987, which coincidentally coincides with the beginning of the Rush Limbaugh show, and the bashing of democrats, or anyone remotely resembling anyone liberal. Strange how that worked, huh?
Prior to Regan??s veto, there were rules and laws which made the media report both sides of a story. Prior to that time the television stations were considered ??keepers of the public trust??. Now, with the fairness doctrine gone, there is no longer anything to stop media outlets from distorting facts in any manner they see fit. Without any regulations, the media has become lazy, being content to accept the facts that are spoon-fed them, and not do any research or fact checking of their own. Or, God forbid, when they actually do find the facts don??t agree with the lies, deceptions and half-truths that come from this administration, they are too scared to report them, fearing their access to the President, or the White House will be held back, not unlike a petulant father withholding a child??s allowance for no other reason than he can.
The media as a whole has forgotten who it works for. It??s supposed to work for the viewers of its product, not the members of the White House, republicans, democrats, corporate America or even the Christian coalitions.
The truly unfortunate thing is, I see no change on the horizon. There is no network, or broadcast group which has the integrity to attack the current administration and tell the American audience the truth, which is we are being collectively being deceived, and deliberately lied to on a daily basis, and hold those in power accountable for their actions, and continue to do so, until the changes the American people want and deserve come to pass. Until that day arrives, we??ll continue to live in a world that George Orwell warned us about in 1984, with in the case OBL playing the part of Emmanuel Goldstein. (if anyone has any doubts of this claim, go back and read the book. It's almost scary) Until the Broadcast media decides it once again a keeper of the public trust, and not a profit center for its parent companies, things will only get worse.
Oh, and by the way, knowing everything is more of a burden than a pleasure, as anyone who does can tell you??.not that I??m one of them, except in my own mind??.(God I hope they can see the humor in that last line, but it??s had to tell sometimes)
