In Reply To: you should pay less when you find the gig; say 6% in that case, 10% otherwise, though I think those numbers are high, as salaries are coming down. You may also want to negotiate rates based on salary, maybe 6% tops for anything under six figures, 3% for anything under 50K. And, you should pay much less or nothing if you re-sign; should you stay somewhere for 15 years, there's no way you should pay a high commission the whole time. Everything, as I'm sure you're aware, is negotiable before you sign, no matter what you hear to the contrary.
Message: Very helpful, sun dog. Thank you very much. Just one more question: When you are using the 6%/3% example, are you talking about if I find the gig myself?? Otherwise, I assume that if my agent does the work, then I would negotiate using the 10% figure as a "cap," so to speak.
