Message: I was just wondering, how many of you who read this stuff on a regular basis, and have newsroom/hiring'power' are willing to (a) define what you have and (b) be honest about your mistakes. Now, please understand, I'm not asking you to undress in front of everyone. What I'm hoping is that I/we can get some idea about what has gone into some of your decisions. An example: I read recently here that someone thought that KABC should make Philip Palmer its chief water carrier, i.e., make him "the man" and dispense with the 'national search'. Interestingly, wasn't he the same Philip Palmer who was fired/not renewed in Denver (from a morning or weekend gig) because someone thought he didn't have "what it takes"? Also, didn't someone in Denver also let Lynette Romero go because she didn't have "it" and didn't she end up at KTLA as the main female anchor? (She may not be the main female anchor anymore.) My question is, what is it that causes some 'power' people to miss it completely in evaluating talent? I don't know who Philip Palmer is, but the fact that some think he's ready for prime time in LA while he was once shown the door in another market because he didn't have the right TVQ has always baffled me. There are examples all over the place where poor judgement on some people's part, people whose job it is to know better, just blew it with certain talent. I know there are ***holes calling the shots all over the place--along with good people, but who holds these people accountable? And, does this poor judgement ever make them targets for termination? Please, provide examples that might help put this whole "eye for talent" thing in perspective.
