It all sounds good but have you thought about the culture shock factor. I lived and worked in Western North Carolina and there??s not a lot to do. You can visit the Biltmore Estate only so many times. But I??ve lived everywhere and California is awesome. Being a big city guy I can never run out of things to do in LA. Granted Atlanta and Charlotte are not far away and the beach is a good drive, but there??s still nothing to do around ??them parts?? Okay the outdoor activities are allright, but that??s it. I mean you are living in paradise..why leave? I say get a better job out there. 85K really isn??t that much in Cali.
I??ve been trying to get out there for years. Unfortunately we sometimes get pigeon holed in the area where we work and News Directors are reluctant to hire people who haven??t lived on their coast.
What was your age anyway??you didn??t say
Good luck

First off, thanks for all the great comments. It is always interesting to hear views from others that have been in this situation. We are not kids, had our children late and are in our late 40s closing in on 50. We are not California natives but have simply lived here longer than anywhere else in our adult lves. Also, when I said north of LA I'm talking Ventura County, not LA county. However, the living cost are still astronomical anyway you cut it. As for one comment on taxes, if with Prop 13 when you figure $600k for a starter home your property tax bill will be $6k which is an extra $500 per month. Not exactly chump change.
