PBS stations don't have excellent equipment (THAT costs money, which they don't have) and they won't ask you to contribute during fund drives. They will expect you to work for less pay than commercial stations in the same market. It used to be said that the health benefits were excellent, so it made up for the less competitive salary...this isn't true anymore - the benefits are hardly top-notch. Staffing is not excessive either - never enough people to cover
production projects, BUT I will say the people you work with will be dedicated and passionate about what they do.
Co-workers are always the best part of working at a PBS station.

I turned down a job at the local public station two years ago after a meager offer and learning that employees are expected to contribute.
The job did not include ANY benefits and paid about $20,000 less than a comparable job at a local commercial station where I used to work. (There was a possibility of qualifying for benefits after working there for several years.)
I agree that the people who work there are dedicated and passionate. They certainly are not doing it for the money.
