Overall the management (Shannon High) is solid there. They have a new GM so the jury is out but I hear the vibe is 'strained' with him.
The big questions, as a past employee and from the tech crew there that I've heard from is that the studio is the size of a dime and the lighting makes it look even smaller. The talent complains to no avail that they look like shit. It's TV folks.. you should make your talent look BETTER than normal, not worse. They can even make the hottest chick look haggard.
The cameras are from 1940. The gear is old and that is just part of the hell to pay with being a CBS O & O. They finally got a new newsroom but it was not built to be on-air but they insist on doing it. They built some strange podium for the reporters with breaking news. It looks like a bad school auditorium.
The story selection is terrible. The writing is salacious (sp) and they make even the saddest, grossest story more sad and more gross than it even needs to be. That especially runs off viewers in the morning. They do some decent investigative stuff.. esp Robin Kish. The ego of Brian Andrews usually over-shadows whatever story he's doing but maybe I just know too much.
They have some rock solid people.. esp behind the anchor desk and in weather. The rest are rather frogettable and the run and gun just looks played out.
WTVJ does the closest thing resembling journalism.
WPLG is a strange mix. Laurie looks terrific but not enough to outweigh the crap (Kamal) they put on the air.
7 is 7. Always will be and always will do what they do the best.
Didn't know I had that much to say. But that was fun.
