What is so professional about 4 other stations presenting the same tired format of shock headline, followed by tease, tease, tease, toss to WX, break, tease, tease, tease, national news for 15 minutes, toss to WX, tease, break, Sports Guy, tease, traffic, lame non news item that has been teased to death and is not even interesting, more WX from the Doppler Radar 5000, fake happy tag see you all tomorrow and good by.
Young has so much debt on the acquisition of KRON that they cannot possibly make a sufficient return to justify the investment. The advertisers aren't going to pay more money for fewer viewers so hard choices need to be made.
Did anybody see the writing on the wall?
Take a look at the post NAB goodies from Avid, particularly Avid iNEWS Instinct. My 12 year old could put a piece together with audio, video and script in less than 10 minutes. Fewer expensive editing bays, fewer editors, faster turn around. You can top and tail a pathfire piece in 10 seconds.
Have you seen the new Sony Blue DVD cameras and more of the Ikegami Editcams. No tape to run out, editing in the camera, loop recording for standups so you never miss that perp walk no matter how long you wait.
Who here works for Sinclair?You noticed their central cast news service. What happened to all of those regional news stations? Sinclair broadcasts local weather from Cockeysville, MD and if they're lucky the local station gets 10 minutes of local news in a 30 minute broadcast.
The result is fewer jobs in the local markets.
Anybody work for GE? Haven't you noticed that all of your local spots are inserted from a central server located at one of the main centres in Chicago, Dallas, New York or Los Angeles.
What happened to all of those graphics artists in the local O and Os? That's right; it all comes from a central graphics location in some location that isn't my local newsroom.
With a network connection and an Avid iNEWS Control Air workstation I can playback video clips in Buffalo, NY from my PC located in Rochester, MN.
Don't laugh too hard at Parkervision. Just talk to those sound engineers and technical directors and assistant producers and camera operators who don't have a control room or studio to worry about any more.
It's gotten to the point where I don't have anyone to make me my coffee any more.
Pretty soon I'll have to write my own copy.
Wait a minute, perhaps Jon Stewart is right. It's all just fake. If the owners can get more people watching a burning log fire, then its adios noticias.
Don't forget, it isn't about looking good or great scoops or who's first with what thing. It is about advertisers paying hard cash based on the number of viewers pretending to pay attention. And if the views decide they don't like my pretty face, the I'll be out of a job, along with the rest of you.
