I've been working as an AP in a medium market for about a year now. I'm dying to get out there and report, but it's not gonna happen at this station. I'll definitely have to go smaller. Getting a tape together when you can't actually get out there and report is hard, I'll admit but you can find a way. After morning shows I've shot a few standups in the studio. And when a photog has a few extra minutes we go somewhere to shoot standups in the field. Also, if you're at a place where you can't really report, see if any reporters are willing to let you take one of their packages and either revoice it or rewrite it all together. It's taking me what seems like forever to get mine done, because it's got to be a good time for a ton of other people to help you out! You can't do it alone! |

...don't simply revoice someone else's story. That's not reporting, it's plagiarism, and it's not gonna help you learn to actually DO the work.
When your shift is over, volunteer to go on VOSOT patrol, then come back and WRITE them. Volunteer to field produce and anchor pack, then come back and WRITE it. Then, and only then, do you need to worry about getting your standups shot and your face on a tape.
I worked a morning shift, then worked for off the clock when it was over, whatever they would let me do. Came in on weekends. Became a photographer's best friend. Eventually, I was a good writer and reporter, AND had a good tape.
Do the work; the rest will come.
