I also was out of a top J-school when a job offer came. And I agree with one of the previous posters - somehow, over time, the magic was lost. I felt that there was more value in the work I did in college. So I got out. I moved back home, got an internship in PR, and now work for an agency. I really enjoy the work, it keeps my hours filled - and the best part is now I am able to be near the people I love. My suggestion is to leave if you don't like it. Esp. is you are still in your 20's. You have the time to really cut back and develop a new career. Take another posters advice and compare what you want out of this to what you're getting. You'll know then if you are meant to be in it.
And to the poster who asked whether we thought we were going to be able to do actual journalism, the answer is wholeheartedly YES! That's what I loved, that's what I wanted. I knew I was going to run into challenges in trying to do that, but I didn't I was going to run into steel doors with no operating locks. And it's probably people like you who stand back and let those obstacles stand. Keep your cynicism to yourself - some of us entered this profession with the best of intentions, and watched people rub each one into the dirt. |

So I go back to the first piece of advice I got as an intern 13 years ago..."Get now while you can" I laughed at them, but I wish I listened. I love the job, but it's robbed me of any personal life, family life...etc. I feel like I live for the job now and not working to live. If I knew how to get out I would.
