In Reply To: It seems to me your problem runs deeper than simply not having a resume tape. A resume tape is supposed to be a sample of your best work as a reporter, anchor, or whatever. Your issue seems to be less a matter of not having a tape, but rather that you have not done any work as a reporter. Whether you can "fake together" a story or two to put on a tape, the problem will remain that you apparently have never gone out in the field and covered, written and produced a television news story. This does not put you in a good position to compete with other entry level wannabes who may have 25-40 actual stories under their belts. There is no substitute for actually getting out and doing it to learn how to produce a half-way acceptable package, or more importantly, how to cover a story. Your solution? You are probably being unrealistic to expect you are going to walk into an on-air reporting position when you have zero reporting experience and, as a result, nothing to show for it. My suggestion would be to get an off-air job (producer, assignment editor, tape editor, photographer, etc) in a smaller market, one small enough that they would consider hiring an entry level reporter. Then take advantage of the fact that you are "in the door" to look for opportunities to get out in the field and do some reporting. It would be easy as a photographer. In small stations, you'll be sent out without a reporter frequently. Show them what you can do. As a producer or AE, you may need to come in on your days off to help out, etc. If you want it badly enough, you can find a way to position yourself as the next new reporter at that station. If not, you'll still have some stories you can use to produce a tape and shop yourself elsewhere. Good luck.
Message: That was a most thoughtful and accurate response, and there's not much more that can be said to this person.
